I love you! Remember?

A couple of days ago, Laurence came to me and said "Something that I'm going to tell you is going to make you jealous." He told me that Alex just said "I love you, Dada" all of a sudden. They were playing with a building toy that we'd just opened for him. He has been obsessed with it and especially likes to put the little rubber connectors in a row of holes. Laurence asked Alex to share one connector with him and Alex said "no..." in his slow but deliberate way. Later, Laurence found another one and gave it to Alex and said "see how much Dada loves you? Even though I wanted one I let you have it". Several minutes later, Alex said "I love you, Dada".

Just the next day, Laurence took Alex to say goodnight to me as I have not been well and stayed in bed. I hugged him and kissed him and played a bit with him as usual and they went to get ready for bed. Later on, Laurence told me that when Alex was in his room he suddenly said "I love you, Mama" and blew a kiss towards the direction of my bedroom!

Alex's language ability often surprises everyone around him. The other day Alex found a bouncing ball and started to play with it. Byoobyoo, our cat, got very interested too. Laurence told Alex to be careful and not hit Byoobyoo with it, but he could play around Byoobyoo. Later that day, Alex saw Byoobyoo was lying underneath the coffee table. Alex went up to him and said to ByooByoo "bounce ball, remember?" Laurence didn't know how Alex learned that. How does he know what "remember" means?

Compliments

Often when Alex learns to do something new and does well we usually say "Hao bang" or "Good job". A few days ago, he asked me to turn on music for him while he's eating. I was busy doing something else so I first said "Mama does not know how to do it". He just kept yelling and asking me to do it. I got around and turned the music on. He said "hui le" - you now can, then "hao bang!". I was so pleased to be complimented by Alex.

This morning, Laurence was having breakfast with Alex. Laurence got out a banana and peeled it in front of Alex. I guess Laurence does not do this that often before Alex, so Alex said "Good job!". Laurence said that Alex was not confident with his dad's banana peeling skills but now he is more comfortable!

Cruise

We came back a few days ago for a 5 day cruise. Alex had lots of fun as we were with him almost all the time and went for various activities. We tried the day care service on the ship but he cried badly saying "mom" or "dada hug". We felt so bad to go away the second time and just hid outside to wait for him to calm down. After 10 minutes, we couldn't bare any more and took him out. Once we went back to our cabin, he started playing the light switches mounted on the wall, which he has been obsessed since beginning then said in Chinese "Baobao gao xing" -- Alex is happy!. I was so surprised to hear that he actually expressed his feeling so promptly and appropriately.

The second night on the ship was an formal elegant night. We all dressed up formally before going for the dinner. I was wearing a long skirt and a top with animal print. He saw me and said in Chinese "Mama yifu piao liang". Mama's clothes is beautiful! I was so happy to hear that at the moment.

On the way back on the airport, there was a long wait before our flight home. We were sitting in some resting area and he started to socialize with two passagers that we don't know. When he saw one had a bottle of water, he held up his to her and said "Cheers!" She said "cheers" in response and they did this a few more times. He then told her "open". She just couldn't stop laughing, but still complied and opened the bottle. He then said "drink". Finally, he also asked her to close the cap after drinking ("close"). They repeated this cycle several times.

At one point, I went to a farther seat which was just vacated. Laurence said to one of the ladies that we maybe should go away a bit so that Alex does not keep "cheersing" them. She said "no, I don't mind. No, really I really don't mind".

The other woman had a large red toy lobster as a carry on for pillow. Alex went to take it away. I tried to stop him and they all said it's fine. It seemed that they really enjoyed playing with him. Later on at the airplane, they all called out his name when we were getting on the plane. It was too bad that we didn't sit close to them.

When we were waiting by the gate at one point I got up and told Laurence I was going to get some hot tea. Alex came with me, following behind and made sure to say "hot tea!" to every passenger we passed. A couple of people had their heads down reading or using laptops, and he ducked down to catch their eye before telling them "hot tea!". Almost all of them started smiling at him and responded to him.

At the age of a little over two year old, Alex has really been enjoyed his time being a little happy person.

Share

Today Jan 5, 2011, was the first day of class at Preschool family after the holidays. Alex still remembers the school and said so in Chinese. At one point during the class, another girl in the class came next to us and had a toy syringe in her hand. Alex went to her and wanted the toy. The girl didn't want to give it up at first but Alex said to her "share" and then she gave him the toy! I was not sure if I heard it right, but the mom of the girl laughed and told me that what he said.

Sharing was a big thing through the classes from beginning. Parents often say it to solve the situation when two kids fight for one toy. I am surprised and happy to know that Alex took the concept and solve the situation himself!

Baby skin trouble

Baobao started having little pimples starting from 3 or 4 weeks old, and they got worse around week 5. We took him to see his doctor who said he also has baby eczema. His face has reddish bumps and also down his neck and upper back/chest. We put on special lotion and it seems to be getting better.

Recently the skin under his eyebrows also got yellowish and "crusty". It turns out that this is a variation of cradle cap. We were told to put 1% hydrocortisone cream on it, and it looks a lot better today.
